San Angelo is a vibrant oasis on the edge of the Chihuahuan Dessert, in the heart of sheep & goat country. The North Concho River runs through our city, separating the historic Fort Concho from a downtown full of eclectic western charm mixed with a blossoming music and arts scene.

In July 2020, San Angelo was found on a list of best cities in the south to live after the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Business Insider. San Angelo was sitting at No. 17 and one of only 3 cities in Texas on the list.

On Nov. 2, 2020, Business Insider placed San Angelo at No. 11 in its "Top 12 Texas Cities Everyone in the Country is Moving To" list.

There are certainly reasons why coming to San Angelo is attractive, and those reasons include San Angelo's art, culture, and businesses that have received their own recognition in 2020.

Texas Highways named San Angelo's Pop Art Museum as one of its "13 Things to Do in 2020". Also, TripAdvisor named the San Angelo Visitors Center as one of The Traveler's Choice Best of the Best in 2020.

The San Angelo Stock Show & Rodeo ranks among the nation's largest rodeos in total contestants and the livestock show ranks fourth in the nation in entries, according to its official website.

San Angelo was featured in the 2020 October-November issue of Western Art & Architecture Magazine in the Wanderings section of the national magazine. 

The six-page story describes Fort Concho, the San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts, the Visitors Center, downtown businesses in historic buildings, Paintbrush Alley, the new Pop Art Museum, the International Water Lily Collection, the Chicken Farm Art Center and Angelo State University.

San Angelo was named one of three locations in Texas with a permanent 'Don’t Mess with Texas Mural' by the Texas Department of Transportation.

In 2020, the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce received a 5-star accreditation rating from the US Chamber of Commerce.

San Angelo is a military-friendly city having received the ALTUS Award for outstanding community support of Goodfellow Air Force Base in 2014 and 2018.

The trophy is awarded annually to only one Air Education and Training Command (AETC) community in the nation that provide the best support to its local military installation.

San Angelo is the only city in the country to win the ALTUS award twice.

San Angelo was ranked No. 1 among True West Magazine’s 2020 Top Western Towns, according to a news release promoting the magazine's February-March issue that hit newsstands Feb. 18, 2020.  San Angelo was the only Texas city on the list.

True West Magazine also recognized downtown San Angelo sites and businesses in their Best of 2020 awards:

  • Best Western History Bookstore – The Cactus Book Shop
  • Best Place to Live Like an Old West Cowboy (Winter) – San Angelo
  • Best Heritage Bed & Breakfast – Old Central Fire House Bed & Brew

It's hardly the first time the magazine has recognized San Angelo. In 2019, San Angelo was named to the Top 10 list as the No. 2 True Western Town behind Tombstone, Arizona.

True West Magazine also named Fort Concho as one of the best preserved frontier forts in 2012, and the museum at Fort Concho won the American Cowboy Culture for best western museum in 2014 by the National Cowboy Symposium in Lubbock, Texas.

In December 2018, Shannon Medical Center was named one of the IBM Watson Health Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospitals in the nation.

In January 2020, Shannon achieved a 5-Star hospital rating, a prestigious honor given to the most elite hospitals in the country, according to a news release. The rating is listed on the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Hospital Compare website.

For 18 years in a row, San Angelo ISD has received the highest rating of “A” on the Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas. Schools FIRST is the financial accountability system for Texas school districts developed by the Texas Education Agency in response to Senate Bill 875 of the 76th Texas Legislature in 1999.

Howard College in San Angelo was ranked No. 2 in the Top 10 “Military Friendly” and “Military Spouse Friendly” Community Colleges in the United States for ’20-’21 by militaryfriendly.com 

For the 12th consecutive year, Angelo State University has been listed by The Princeton Review as one of the country’s best institutions for undergraduate education, an honor that goes to only about 13% of the nation’s more than 3,000 four-year colleges.

Angelo State University has been named one of the nation’s “Great Colleges to Work For” for 2020 by ModernThink, and has been recognized in a special edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education, the major national news source for college and university faculty and administrators.
